Decoding the Origins of Blue Monday in January

As we plunge into the heart of winter, there's one day that seems to carry a bit of a gloomy reputation – Blue Monday. But fear not! Today, we're diving into the origins of this infamous day and exploring some uplifting ways to stay motivated during the shorter winter days.

The Mysterious Blue Monday: So, what exactly is Blue Monday? Well, it's not a cosmic alignment or a result of some mystical forces. In fact, it was originally coined by psychologist, Cliff Arnall back in 2004 when travel company, Sky Travel, asked him for a 'scientific formula' for the January blues. Then in 2005 the UK-based travel agency published a press release, which claimed to have calculated the date using an "equation", as part of a marketing campaign! Yep that's right, it was made up in order to try and sell us holidays. The formula they used to determine this (supposedly) most depressing day of the year involved factors like weather conditions (therefore is only applicable to the northern hemisphere), debt levels, time since Christmas, and failed New Year's resolutions.

Since then Blue Monday has become a symbolic reminder of the challenges many of us face during the winter months. The lack of sunlight, chilly weather, and post-holiday blues can all indeed contribute to a dip in our mood (and perhaps make us book more holidays?).

  4. Embrace Hygge: Hygge is a word in Danish and Norwegian that describes "a cosy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality". Hygge encourages finding joy in simple, cosy moments. Surround yourself with soft blankets, warm beverages, and good books. Create a cosy haven in your home to make winter a time of comfort and relaxation.
