Mindful Media Consumption: The Dark Side of the TikTok Algorithm
A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of London and the University of Kent has shed light on the concerning impact of TikTok's algorithm on teenage boys. The study reveals how the platform's content curation can influence social attitudes and behaviours, particularly in relation to misogynistic content.
Frighteningly, the study found a significant increase in misogynistic content presented to teenage boys on TikTok. Specifically, there was a fourfold increase in such content on the "For You" page within just five days for test accounts designed to mimic the habits of disaffected young males. This rapid escalation highlights the aggressive nature of TikTok's algorithm in pushing harmful content.
Misogynistic content, including videos that objectify or discredit women, surged from 13% to 56% over the five-day period. This type of content often features figures like Andrew Tate, who has gained a massive following by promoting toxic views towards women.
What does this have to do with mental health and wellness? Well a lot, the study emphasises that TikTok's algorithm targets users' vulnerabilities, such as loneliness or feelings of loss of control, and gamifies harmful content. This process not only increases engagement but also normalises harmful ideologies among young users.
What's worse is this normalisation of misogynistic views is not confined to the digital realm. The study found that these harmful ideologies are moving off screens and into schools, becoming embedded in mainstream youth cultures. This shift indicates a troubling trend where online consumption directly impacts offline behaviours and social attitudes.
To address these issues, the researchers have recommend several, long overdue, measures:
- Hold Social Media Companies Accountable: Social media platforms should be pressured to prioritise the wellbeing of young people over profit and address the harm caused by their algorithms.
- Healthy Digital Diet Education: Implementing educational programs that promote a balanced approach to digital consumption, akin to a healthy diet, can help mitigate the negative impacts of harmful content.
- Promoting Awareness: Increasing awareness among parents and the community about how algorithms work and their potential impacts can empower them to better support young people.
This study by the University of London and the University of Kent highlights the urgent need for action to mitigate the harmful effects of TikTok's algorithm on teenage boys! By understanding the mechanisms behind content curation and its impact on social attitudes and behaviours, we can take steps to create a safer and more supportive digital environment for young people. Social Media is not for kids, it isn't confined to the same rules as other media outlets and the big question that should be being asked is, why not? If TV shows and movies have to adhere to rules put in place to protect young minds, why not the likes of Meta and TikTok?
Always remember, consume your media with the same level of intent you would consume alcohol or food, if something no longer feels good you have the power to stop it.
